About Us
What is Little Athletics?
Little Athletics is a modified form of athletics for children aged between 5 and 15. By participating in running, jumping and throwing activities, they have fun, improve their fitness and develop coordination skills. Depending on their age, children take part in such events as sprints, middle distance, hurdles, jumps (long jump, high jump, triple jump) and throws (shot put, discus, javelin). Parents, Grandparents and friends can also be involved by helping with various events.
There is also a Tiny Tots program for 3-4year olds that allows younger children to participate in similar events to their Little Athlete siblings.
But my child isn’t very good at sport!
Our motto is “family, fun and fitness”, with the emphasis on doing your best. You can join with any level of skill or fitness. There are lots of different events so most children find at least one that they’re good at and enjoy. Making new friends and improved confidence is also an outcome for most children. For children who might want to, they can compete in regional, state and national competitions.
How long does it go for?
The season runs from mid-October through to March. Queenborough Little Athletics Club’s season calendar will be uploaded once confirmed and published on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
Most meetings are on Saturday mornings from 8.45am – 11.30am as well as occasional midweek twilight meetings. Younger athletes finish earlier.
Due to council works at Sandown Park at the start of the Little Athletics season each year, we typically hold the meets at the beginning of the season at the Domain Athletics Centre.
What equipment will we need?
On the first day, it’s fine to wear ordinary sports clothes and sandshoes. If you decide to register, our Centre uniform is navy shorts with a printed white and blue t-shirt or singlet. Also, children must bring a hat and a drink bottle. Parents are required to attend with their children.
Do I have to register on the first day?
No. If your child has not previously registered, they are welcome to try our events for two weeks before you need to register them at their third meeting.
How much does it cost?
For season 2025-26 the registration fee is $155 per child. Tiny Tots are $50 per child. Little Athletics Tasmania no longer offers family discounts for more than one child.
What is expected of parents?
Because Little Athletics is a totally voluntary organisation, we cannot operate without the assistance of parents each week in fulfilling the many and varied duties required. These include very simple tasks such as raking a sand pit, measuring a throw or recording results. No previous experience is required and parental participation is expected. Children must be accompanied by a parent each week so dropping off and picking up at the end is not allowed.
Inclusion
We welcome all athletes at Queenborough Little Athletics Centre regardless of their ability, gender identity, race or religion. We are a safe and fully inclusive centre with affiliation with the Special Olympic Association. See Little Athletics Australia for more details
